Chubby and Polite!

I don't quite know where to start this story but when I came here in October of 2008, my weight was pretty much where it was supposed to be.  I lived at a shelter for three months, and you get two meals a day and NO TREATS.  So my new Mom, she didn't give me much in the way of treats either.  But then she noticed a lot of people were baking cookie treats for their dogs and she thought well, maybe, she should be doing this too.

So lots of recipes were available for good dog cookies, apples and peanut butter in the picture.  I loved them.  So when I would come in from my morning outside, I would sit by the treat box and look up.Mom would offer me one, and I would go off happy.  But all of a sudden I was asking to go out of doors much oftener and each time I came in of doors, we would go through the asking for a cookie routine.
Yummy, right?  Right!  Now Mom knew this was not a good thing going on here but just didn't know quite how to end it, being pretty much of a pushover for me.  But Mom thinks we have done it, and here is how!

Yesterday, she made me a new batch of cookies.  They were called Mom's Pumpkin Biscotti cookies.  Mom didn't notice it right away, I would take one and go off to eat it, but I wasn't eating them.  I didn't like them!  So I would politely take one, take it to my treat place and leave it there!  Not even take a little bite off!  So after a bit,it just disappears!  If I  ask I get another one.  She gives me  the same thing.  Mom comes and takes it away  when I don't eat it.  Maybe one of these days, I will forget to ask!   In the meantime, I will think about the peanut butter-apple ones and hope they show up again.  Mom just smiles at me.

Now don't tell me to eat carrots or green beans, I don't like them either.  I'd rather chew on my bone!

Maybe next time you see me, I will still be polite, but not so chubby!

Kisses,
Stella

It pays to be picky when you eat. It keeps the humans on their toes. If you eat everything they give you, they will keep doing the same thing and you won't learn what else is out there. So you are doing the right thing. There may be some value in taking the treats you don't like outside, the squirrels may like them and you can get rid of them and move on to good ones.

Stumpy and I have the same routine. she just gets a tiny treat when we come in. PLUS the treats are subracted from the amount she gets for dinner! Often times, she gets kibble for treats! Our dogs are sooooooooo abused, unloved and neglected!

Hi Stella
Most of the time Gail gives me 'treats' that are just a slightly different flavour of my standard kibble. She thinks I am not aware of this and that I think they are treats. So I humour her and pretend that I do think they are treats. (They do taste nice anyway, just not THAT nice). Every once in a while I get a real treat, like a gravy bone biscuit, a piece of liver or even a REAL bone!

Stella, first of all you are NOT chubby. We agree with Amber Daweenie - no way would we leave anything uneaten - that would be TD and Ciara. You know Picky Boy Pnantom.

Now, Mom, this is for you, where are those peanut butter apple treats? Stella really wants some.

Tricks can be tricky! Marge will eat just about everything, so I have to be very careful to reduce her meals on days where she gets a lot of treats. She goes to training class often, so that means there are quite a few days where she only gets half of her dinner or so!

Glad Mom took the hint and saw that you didn't like those cookies!

Hi, Stella!
I loved your story!
Sure the change of the recipe worked!
Hmmm... my mom wishes I'd do the same!
I eat everything she gives to me! But... she only gives me one piece per day!
Kisses and hugs

We just want you to be healthy and to avoid all the ailments that being overweight makes harder, like arthritis. You are beautiful to us no matter what.

You made the hu-dad chuckle that you still take the treat. We are a little less refined and would just spit it out and look at him again.

Stell! Good job of training your mom :-) We are very impressed. Also impressive is that you got her to bake for you. Sheesh. Milkbones, here...

Sorry about your snow. We have lots and lots of rain here in 'sunny' southern California :(
