A few problems!

Hi Evfurbuddy!

This is a post I really don't want to write, but maybe some of you are having the same problems and it would be good to talk. Lots of you know I rescued my Mom a couple of years ago.  She is a good Mom too, with just a few exceptions.  Here is what this is about:

I am a shedder, black hair, year around.  My Mom thinks that if she could keep me brushed she would have to do less vaccuuming of this black hair.  But I really hate being brushed.  I will roll around in the snow and in the grass, and get rid of some that way.  I also get matted.  So my Mom goes and spends money on these tools.
The deal on the bottom there with the green handle is the matt buster.  Its hard to work it and you gotta be patient with it, which I am NOT.  So I just get in a fight with my Mom about it, and take off where she can't get me.
So then, when I think the coast is clear, there she is waiting for me with the Pinbrush.  Thats not so bad, but a little goes a long way with me.  So we get in another fight and the same deal happens again!
But now listen, after two years, this last week, every night she brings out the tools except NOW she cuts up some deli ham, and puts it in the green bowl you see in the picture. (and Huffle knows we all love ham.)  So we go at it, she gives me some ham, and de-matts and brushes, and gives me some more measly pieces of ham.
Then I can't take it anymore and I just run off.  Then I hear her voice saying "Stella?  Better come back, Zkhat is eating the ham pieces."  So I go back for another round!
Evfurry night she takes a soccer ball size of hair off me and the house is staying cleaner.  She likes it and I am getting used to it.

By the way, Zkhat lets her brush her for hours!  Hopeless!

But you have to admit, my Mom is impatient AND a slow learner.
Not a good combo.  But a good Mom.

Are your Moms good at this?

I'm outta here!

Kisses!

Stella

We hate the brush too, Stella. And Mom here also has quite the range of tools. She has a friend who smears peanut butter on the refrigerator door and brushes the dog while he licks the fridge good clean:) We would need a whole jar of pb to get it done here.

Stella, has your mom tried one of those glove brushes? It's just like a glove, but somehow all your fur sticks to it. It doesn't feel or look anything like a brush. Our neighbor uses one on her dogs and cat. They all have long fur (and undercoats) and it seems to work well...and you get to feel like you're getting petted, instead of groomed!

Ha! OP Pack! that's hysterical!

All the dogs I have had have loved their brushing, too a point! I get over zealous and want to brush until every last shedding hair is out, so thier patience wears thin, but all in all it works ok.

Swimming and baths help to loosen/remove hair. More beach time?

A little fish oil in the food helps too lessen shedding, too (but maybe not enough that you would notice)

OH! And the furminator is truly awesome. there are cheaper versions out there, but they are just different enough that they are not as effective as the furminator.

Morgan and Tsar are the big shedders around here. Morgan will let Mom and Dad brush her, but Tsar hides. If they catch him, he wiggles and screams. Mom has just about given up on him. Sometimes Dad can get some hairs out of him, but Tsar puts up a good fight.

Hi Stella
Well done for educating your Mom (despite her being a slow learner) into the idea that she only gets to brush you when you have tasty treats in your mouth! I too work by that principle, but I have noticed that Gail tends to give me hard biscuits and stuff that take quite a lot of chewing so I don't gobble it all down too quickly.
Hope you and your Mom have a nice weekend Stella.

Hi Stella. Mom sends us to the groomer. she says let the professionals handle it/us. In between we get brushed, or mom just uses the hose and the duster attachment on the Dyson on us. BOL!

At least you're getting ham now! We don't get brushed because we have very short hair and don't shed much at all. Good luck!

Nice job, Jo, pairing the unpleasant brushing with the yummy ham. I hope that Stella will soon start to look forward to being brushed. Marge doesn't love being brushed, but tolerates it. We use a curry comb, since she has short hair.

Oh yes, our mom thinks we need brushed all the time! What is it with them? We got a blower to help get our fur out and that is a lot better.

Oh hi Stella after so long! I unnerstand all abouts your Mom's wanting to get the matts out and all, but I has to have the same process! We long-haired ladies just need more dolling up than our shorter haired compatriots! I know it's not fair, but I loves being brushed - maybe ham isn't your favorite? Would a lint remover work to start with? Oh dear, I'm not much help, am I??? But there sure are some good remedies by the other commenters!!!

Stella, I know how you feel. I love mom but she comes after me with all kinds of crazy looking tools because I shed constantly and get mats in my fur. My mom is a very slow learner also. What are we to do! Lots of love, Holly

Now Stella, you know how important good grooming is, especially for you gals. You don't want to go around looking all matted and frumpy, do you? Admittedly it is a struggle, but you need to be patient.

Poor mom. She is just trying to help you be your best. You know, if you would hold still it would all be over and she wouldn't have to do a little every day.

I do think the ham is a good idea, but maybe also don't groom until you run away. Try to keep it shorter.

I fear that if you do not work this out that your mom will have to shave you! Not a good look.

Mango

Carrleigh is a 'suck-' and loves to let Mom groom and brush on her. The rest of us are not too fond of it. But our late brother, Java, would let Mom vacuum him - that really kept the hair down.

Has your Mom tried "Cowboy Magic" or even Alberto VO5. A little goes a long way and it helps with the detangling process.

NOBODY CAN BRUSH ME, AS MUCH AS THEY WOULD LIKE TO. I LEAVE HAIR ALL OVER, THEY SHOULD TRY HAM ON ME IT MIGHT WORK.

I guess that's one of the best things about having short brindle furs. There's not too much to brush. And on the times I do gets brushed, I don't mind it too much.

At least you're getting some ham outta the deal. Ham is AWESOME!

Hi Stella, sometimes moms are slow to learn but stick with it.
They soon learn that ham and cheese are a way to a dog's heart.
We shed loads and our mum has to hoover every single day - she tries to furminate us every other day which fortunately we both love.
We know furminators aren't right for every kinda dog though.
Even with the furminating and huge piles of fur we still have drift fur roaming around the house.....!

This is funny, Stella! Your mom tries so hard... :-)

A little brushing goes a LONG way in our house. And a little ham doesn't last very long at all!

I don't let anyone brush me. Not even for ham. At least, no-one has offered me ham to get brushed so I am not getting brushed.

Um, do you think I am missing out on ham here?
