Otis and Eddie

DK and the Thundering Herd asked for a picture and a dog story and it made me think of Otis the Scottie and Eddie the Mutt (this is a picture of a picture, so please excuse the quality)

Otis was my only and long wished for Scottie, much adored by my whole family and certainly me.  Eddie came into our lives as a street guy, starving and a real mess.  But he became, in a very short time,
Otis's best buddy. The above picture was not an unusual afternoon sight to see.  The two curled up, snoozing.

One day, when Otis was about five months old, I found some very big Milkbones and gave each of them one.  They were way too big for Otis but he took it, and walked around with it, Eddie zoomed off for the lilac bushes where he could consume his in peace.  Otis thought about his, layed it on the porch, and started digging a hole  at the bottom of the steps.  He stayed at the job for quite a while, working his hole and making it bigger.  Then! it was perfect, and he took his bone and stood it up in the hole, by the long way!
So here is this little worker, his hole he has dug, and his bone in it.  Only about 1/3 of it is sticking out the top!

Otis knew that this was not right, he was just a little guy, but still instinct told him, this was wrong.  So, he looked at it for quite a while, trying to puzzle out his mistake.  Then here comes his pal Eddie, always hungry, always willing to take whats yours, and he started biting the end of the bone off and got it so it was finally at ground level.  Instead of being upset, Otis saw it as his solution, and he covered the rest up with his paws, gave a sigh and came and sat by me, as if to say, NOW ITS RIGHT!

I wish I had some pictures of this event, because it was probably much cuter in the seeing than it is in the telling.   Eddie lived about five years longer and after he died, Otis was most heartbroken.  When we would go for a walk, and he would see a blonde dog coming our way or on the other side of the street, he just KNEW that was Eddie.  It became just heartbreaking to see his response when he knew it wasn't.

So, hows that for a story, DK?

Cheers, hugs, and happy Sunday to all,

Jo and Stella

Now that is a great story. True doggy love and such a helper.. Thanks for sharing..
Yepper Callie girl is doing a good job at herding. We just need to figure out how to slow her down. Can you give us a slow sign that mom could teach her? We are all so proud of her. We rescued her from a lady that had gotten her for herding and gave her up when she realized she was deaf. She said that dog would never herd.. Guess Callie is showing that lady she was wrong..

That's a great story! I can't imagine "starvin' Stumpy" leaving any part of a treat, anywhere, for any reason!

I love your story... I could visualize the two of them with their bones, and Otis digging, and digging, and digging.

I also love the photo. Such love between dogs.

Here's to the memories of both of them.

What a bittersweet story. Anyone who thinks dogs don't remember and don't love their packmates and friends doesn't know what they're talking about.

That was really a wonderful story - what a great memory for you to be able to treasure. Dakota and Phantom were soulmates like that too.

Thank you so much for bringing a smile to my face this morning. Such a sweet story. I can just imagine Otis digging away all so industriously then looking quite puzzled when the bone didn't fit. Priceless!
Cheers,
Gail.

Memories of good pals last forever!

My first room mate got into some sheep and the humans were ordered to put him down.

I wept and cried for days in my kennel... No neighbour beside me, and noone to share my day with...
