My Rescue Story

Norwood is looking for us to post our rescue stories.  I am happy to do that, but mine isn't very long or dramatic!

In October of  2008, I had been in the slammer for three months!  That is an awful long time to a 2 year old pup.  I am mixed Border Collie and Labrador (a Borador!) and I had lots of energy and no where to spend it.  This is what I looked like:

One day my to-be Mom came into the Shelter to help around and had no thoughts of taking a pup home.  Her 16 year old Scottie Otis had passed two years ago and she thought she wouldn't have another dog.
(I fixed that right up!)   She didn't even look at me that first day.  The second day, she did start to think about getting another dog.  She stopped right in front of my cage!  She told one of the helpers that she had given it some serious thought and decided she wanted a medium sized female with a good disposition.  She wanted a dog that she wouldn't have to dress up in a little outfit just to go for a walk.  Then she asked this question:  Does this female have a good disposition?  The helper said, she did, she was wonderful when she first came in, but she gets more depressed and sad as the days go on.  Then my Mom said, I will take her!  So I got operated on, and then adopted to my Mom.  After three months in jail!  My Mom asked why no one looked at me and the woman said because a lot of people don't like black dogs!  Is that sad or what?

So, I have been here a year and a month, I love my Mom and she loves me.  My Mom is profoundly deaf, so I can help her with the door knockings and when the phone rings.

I love my home, and my new bed, and even that dumb cat Ali Z is not so bad anymore.  I am a good girl who stays out of trouble because thats the way I like it and Mom does too.    When my Mom said she would take me, she never opened the door to my cage, or took me for a walk or petted me.  She just looked at me and Knew I was the right one.  We have worked out any problems we may have had.  If you want to see what I look like now, here is a pic of me on the back porch!

A little different would you say?  Support rescue every chance you get, there are lots of good dogs like me just waiting, just waiting for you to point and say "That one!"

Love and kisse,
Stella

The people in my shelter told my mum and dad that people don't like black cats either so I know exactly how you felt Stella. You are lucky to have your mum and she is lucky to have you. Happy thanksgiving to you and to Ali Z too.

You do look much more relaxed and happy Stella. Your mom has been good for you! We know all about the black dog thing too. Sometimes people ask if I am going to bite. Mom always looks at them like they are insane.. then she remembers.

The statistics are awful. Black dogs are the last ones adopted and more often put down than others.

We love black dogs at this house. Eight of us are black.

What a great story (and so true about black dogs). We are very thankful for everyone who helped us find our way to Chez Herd.

Happy Thanksgiving

Ah Stella, such a nice story, and so beautifully told. You are so lucky to have such a caring Mom, and she so fortunate to have you.
You know I've been a bit down in the dumps lately - well that tale has brightened my day!
Cheers, H.

I have heard that black dog thing too. What a load of crap. I have a nice black mask and of course peewee is black all over and we are most wonderful dogs.

Your mom fell totally in love with your sweet face. Why wouldn't she?

Happy day!

That's a lovely story Stella! We don't know why you even had to wait three months - you were so adorable!
Well of course you still are!
A sweet nature is the greatest thing in a dog but sometimes the longer they are in rescue the less sweet they become.
Thank dogness for happy endings.
We are so happy you got a great home and so happy your mom got a great dog.

Thank you for sharing your amazing story, Stella! You and your mom are so lucky to have found each other. That's terrible that nobody wanted you just because your coat is black. Mom has heard of black dog syndrome and think it's terrible. I was in the pound for 6 months and my hoomans can't figure how in the world I was never adopted during that time. In a way though they're thankful I stayed that long as they couldn't imagine life without me. I'm sure your mom feels the same way about you too.

Yepper herding is the highlight of the Heeler's day. They so love to show off what they can do..
One of the dude's that brings Cooper herding was telling someone how strange it is to see Mom herding with the Red's. He was telling them that there was no noise just hand signals.. We know Mom would really appreciate this..
Callie girl has lots of natural abilities and is always looking up at Mom for instructions.. We just need to get our down and stay to perfect her efforts..
